Convert PDF to AVIF

Turn the pages of a PDF into compact AVIF images for modern websites. Everything happens in your browser, so your documents never leave your device.

Why convert PDF to AVIF?

A PDF is a document, not an image, so you can't drop its pages into a slide, a post, an image editor or an image upload field. AVIF usually gives the smallest files of any common format at a given quality, which helps page speed.

One image per page

Each page of the PDF becomes its own AVIF file, named like report-page-2.avif. When a PDF has several pages you can download them together as a zip.

Pages are rendered as images, so text becomes pixels: it can no longer be selected or searched, and it won't stay sharp if you zoom in a long way.

The background stays as it is

PDF pages are rendered on their white page background, so the AVIF keeps the same solid background. AVIF supports transparency, but a converter can't tell which pixels are "background". To get a transparent AVIF, remove the background in an editor first.

Questions

How are PDFs with several pages converted?

Every page becomes a separate AVIF file, numbered by page. With more than one page you can download them all at once as a zip.

Will converting PDF to AVIF reduce quality?

Each page is rendered as a AVIF image. Text and vector graphics become pixels, so they look right at normal viewing size but won't stay sharp if you zoom in far. AVIF is also lossy, so raise the quality setting if text looks fuzzy.

Can everyone open AVIF files?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (version 16 and later) display AVIF. Outside the browser support is patchy: Windows needs the free AV1 Video Extension, and many editors and upload forms don't accept it yet.

Are my PDF documents uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device, so your documents are never sent to a server. Once the page and converter have loaded, it keeps working even if your connection drops.
