Convert Word to PDF
Turn DOCX files into PDFs that look the same on every device, without needing Word installed. The conversion runs in your browser.
How it works
The document is read in your browser: its paragraphs, headings, lists, tables and images are laid out again on PDF pages. Add several DOCX files to convert them in one go, then download each PDF or all of them as a zip.
Close, not pixel-perfect
This isn't Microsoft Word doing the printing, so the layout is a faithful approximation rather than an exact copy. Line and page breaks can fall in different places, and complex layouts, such as text boxes, columns, and headers and footers, may be simplified or left out. For a document that has to match Word to the pixel, use Word's own Save as PDF.
The PDF uses one bundled font, which covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic text. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and other scripts it doesn't include won't render correctly.
DOCX only
The tool reads modern .docx files. Older .doc files from Word 97–2003 use a different format: open them in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save them as .docx first.
Tips
Built-in heading styles convert more reliably than text you've made bold and large by hand. Once you have your PDFs, you can merge them into one file, for example a cover letter and a CV.
Your files stay on your device
CVs, contracts and letters are personal by nature, so they're converted on your own device. The work happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored on a server. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline, and it's free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Questions
Can I convert Word to PDF without Microsoft Word?
Yes. Format Hero reads the DOCX file itself in your browser, so you don't need Word, LibreOffice or any other software installed.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word document?
Close, but not identical. Text, headings, lists, tables and images come through; line breaks, spacing and complex layouts like text boxes or headers and footers can differ or be simplified.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Only .docx is supported. Open the .doc in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, save it as .docx, then convert it here.
Why are some characters missing in my PDF?
The PDF uses a single bundled font that covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Text in scripts like Chinese, Japanese, Arabic or Hebrew isn't included in that font, so it won't show correctly.
