Convert Word to text

Strip a DOCX down to its words and save them as a plain .txt file. Handy for pasting, searching or feeding text into other tools.

What plain text keeps

Every word of the document, paragraph by paragraph, in reading order. Tables come through as their cell text. Everything else, from fonts and colours to bold, images and page layout, is dropped, because a .txt file has no way to store it.

When plain text is the right choice

Use it when only the words matter: pasting into a form or CMS without dragging Word formatting along, counting or searching text, loading content into a script, spreadsheet or translation tool, or keeping a copy that any device will open in fifty years.

If you want to keep headings, lists and links, Word to Markdown keeps that structure in a format that's still plain text.

Accurate by design

The text is read directly from the document's contents, not recognised from an image, so it's exact: no OCR errors, no missing characters. Any language or script in the document comes through, saved as UTF-8. Several DOCX files can be converted at once.

Your files stay on your device

Your document is opened by your browser and the text file is created on your device. The work happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored on a server. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline, and it's free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Questions

How do I convert DOCX to TXT?

Add your .docx files and download the .txt results. Each document becomes a UTF-8 text file with its paragraphs separated by line breaks.

Does it work with old .doc files?

No, only .docx. Save the .doc as .docx in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs first.

What happens to tables and images?

Table cells are kept as text. Images are dropped, because a plain text file can only hold characters.
