Convert Word to Markdown
Turn a DOCX into a Markdown file ready for GitHub, a static site, a docs folder or your notes app. It runs in your browser.
What gets converted
Word headings become # headings, bulleted and numbered lists become Markdown lists, and bold, italics and links keep their meaning. Tables are written as Markdown tables. Fonts, colours and page layout are dropped, since Markdown has no way to express them.
Where Markdown fits
Markdown is the plain-text format behind README files, documentation sites, wikis and note apps like Obsidian. Moving a Word document into Markdown makes it easy to version in Git, review in a pull request and publish with a static site generator.
For a clean result
Use Word's built-in Heading styles: they're what the converter recognises as headings. Simple tables convert best; tables with merged cells or multiple paragraphs per cell don't have a Markdown equivalent and may come out simplified. Give the result a quick read before you commit it.
Your files stay on your device
Internal docs and drafts are converted on your own device, not on someone else's server. The work happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored on a server. Once the page has loaded it keeps working offline, and it's free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Questions
How do I convert DOCX to Markdown?
Add your .docx files and download the .md results. Headings, lists, emphasis, links and simple tables are converted to Markdown syntax.
Which Markdown flavour is the output?
Standard Markdown with pipe tables, as used on GitHub. It works in most editors, static site generators and note apps.
Can I convert the Markdown back to Word later?
Yes. Markdown to Word turns .md files into DOCX with real headings, lists and tables.
Are tables with merged cells supported?
Markdown tables can't merge cells, so those tables are simplified. Check them after converting, or keep complex tables as HTML.
