Convert JPG to BMP

Turn JPG photos into BMP bitmaps for older software. Everything happens in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.

Why convert JPG to BMP?

JPG is everywhere, but its lossy compression and lack of transparency aren't right for every job. BMP is simple and uncompressed, and some older or specialised software won't take anything else.

File size and quality

BMP is uncompressed, so nothing more is lost in the conversion. It can't bring back detail the JPG compression already removed, though. BMP is usually stored uncompressed, so the file will be many times larger: about 36 MB for a 12-megapixel photo.

Where BMP files work

Windows and macOS open BMP, as do most image editors and browsers, but websites and upload forms rarely accept it.

Questions

Will converting JPG to BMP reduce quality?

No further loss: BMP stores the decoded pixels exactly. It can't restore detail the JPG compression already removed, and the file will be bigger.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format; the shorter .jpg extension dates from older versions of Windows that only allowed three-letter extensions. Format Hero accepts both.

Are my JPG photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device, so your photos are never sent to a server. Once the page and converter have loaded, it keeps working even if your connection drops.
