What is a WebP file?
WebP is an image format Google created for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and files are typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG.

What WebP is used for
Images on websites and in web apps. Many sites now serve WebP automatically, which is why "Save image as" often gives you a .webp file.
Strengths
Smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality, with transparency and animation in one format.
Weaknesses
Support outside browsers is still uneven: older software, some upload forms, print services and messaging apps reject it.
Compatibility
All current browsers display WebP (Safari since version 14). Windows 11 and macOS open it, and most editors handle it now, though Photoshop only added built-in support in 2022. Older apps and many upload forms still don't.

Questions
How do I open a WebP file?
Drag it into any modern browser tab. Windows 11 Photos and macOS Preview open it too. If an app refuses it, convert it to JPG or PNG.
Is WebP lossy or lossless?
WebP can be either. Most WebP files on the web are lossy, but the format has a lossless mode too.
Does WebP support transparency?
Yes. WebP supports full transparency, including soft edges and shadows.
Can I convert WebP files without uploading them?
Yes. Format Hero converts WebP files in your browser, on your own device, so they're never sent to a server. It's free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark.
