Convert SVG to ICO

Turn SVG graphics into ICO icons for favicons and Windows. Everything happens in your browser, so your graphics never leave your device.

Why convert SVG to ICO?

SVG is ideal on the web, but many apps, social networks and upload forms only take pixel images. ICO is the format browsers look for at /favicon.ico and the one Windows uses for app and shortcut icons.

From vector shapes to pixels

An SVG describes shapes, so it can be drawn at any size. ICO stores a fixed grid of pixels, so the SVG is rendered at the size declared in the file (its width and height, or its viewBox). Once converted, the image won't scale up cleanly; if you need a bigger ICO, increase the width and height in the SVG first.

SVGs that load external fonts or images may render differently, because the file is drawn on its own. Embedding fonts or converting text to outlines gives reliable results.

Transparency is kept

Both SVG and ICO support transparency, so transparent areas carry over without a fill colour.

Favicons and Windows icons

Browsers still request /favicon.ico from websites, and Windows uses ICO for application and shortcut icons. Icons are square and the ICO format tops out at 256 × 256 pixels, so a square, simple SVG works best; fine detail disappears at 16 × 16.

Questions

Will converting SVG to ICO reduce quality?

SVG has no fixed resolution, so the ICO is rendered at the size the SVG declares. At that size it looks the same; it just won't scale up cleanly afterwards like the SVG does.

Can I convert several SVG files at once?

Yes. Add as many SVG files as you like and they're converted one after another on your device. There's no file-size or file-count limit beyond your device's memory, and you can download the results together as a zip.

Are my SVG graphics uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device, so your graphics are never sent to a server. Once the page and converter have loaded, it keeps working even if your connection drops.
